Is Austin still the place to be?
Wondering whether Austin is still the place to be for business growth and finding tech talent? It is. After decades of tech job growth, we’re still topping charts. If you need proof, here are the latest lists:
Where IT pros should live:
Austin is the top city for IT professionals based on yearly employment growth, IT job openings and startup ecosystem. The study by Kisi and published by TechRepublic showed that Austin is the only top city not also in a top 10 category for salaries and cost of living—keeping it a win-win location for both employers and tech talent alike.
Where IT pros are moving:
Austin is the reigning “Tech Town, USA.” It was named by CompTIA as the top town tech workers are willing to move to based on cost of living, number of postings for open IT positions, and projected job growth.
For venture capital:
Austin is among the top 10 U.S. metros for VC investment, with 263 deals garnering $2.17 billion in 2019. The funding was led by RigUp’s huge $300 million round in October with experts predicting more of the same this year.
“This is great news for tech employers because you want to be based in a place where tech talent can see themselves living and thriving,” says The HT Group Director of Professional & Technical Services Craig Patterson. “The San Francisco Bay Area is losing that appeal, but Austin is still—and will continue to be—attractive for relocating talent.”
That being said, some Austin tech jobs are notoriously hard to fill because of specific skills gaps. Simply put: Even with talent flooding Austin, some tech jobs are growing faster than there are people to fill them. LinkedIn found ‘data storage technologies’ and ‘data science’ to among Austin’s top current skills gaps. CompTIA reports that job growth for ‘software and web developers,’ ‘computer systems and cybersecurity analysts,’ and ‘network architects, admins, and support specialists’ are outpacing other tech occupations.
“If you’re hiring tech talent in these areas,” Patterson advises, “it’s critical to seek recruiting help this year because competition is exceptionally high.”
