We’ve been talking all month on our blog about how Austin tech construction jobs are booming. In the last few weeks, signs are pointing to even bigger prospects—10 times bigger, in fact—for tech workers and those seeking Austin tech construction jobs.
Community Impact reported that Samsung Austin Semiconductor could eventually increase its investment in Taylor by billions of dollars and add several thousand jobs beyond what was initially announced.
“According to several new Chapter 313 applications released July 20 through the Texas comptroller’s website, Taylor ISD has approved nine separate applications for facilities at the Taylor location,” the media outlet published. “If approved, the facilities would bring an estimated $167.6 billion in investment in addition to the $17 billion Samsung has already committed to at the Taylor site. Additionally, the proposed expansions would bring about 8,200 net new jobs to Taylor over the next two decades.”
Two more Samsung plant applications were approved for Austin bringing an additional 1,800 new jobs and an additional $24.5 billion, says the Austin American-Statesman.
What Does This Mean for Austin Tech Construction Jobs?
Samsung’s currently-in-the-works Taylor plant and potential additions are just the tip of the iceberg for tech workers. Mega sites and new projects from other tech companies may be announced soon, making Central Texas a prosperous place to work and set down roots.
Titan Development LTD., for one, announced plans to build what it calls the “Hutto Mega TechCenter” on a stretch of land rumored to have been eyed by Tesla, Inc. before it settled in Del Valle.
“Initial plans call for upward of 2 million square feet of speculative high-tech industrial space, with buildings ranging from 200,000 square feet to more than 1 million square feet” on “part of an area that economic development experts and site selectors have called some of the most coveted land in the country,” The Austin Business Journal reported. One rumored tenant is CelLink Corp., a possible supplier to Tesla, which is expected to create 2,000 jobs over the next decade.
It’s exciting times for Austin tech workers, but more immediately, it’s a crucial period of job growth for those seeking Austin tech construction jobs. After all, as the Statesman points out, “the earliest any of [these newest] fabs would be up and running is 2034, or more than a decade from now. Two aren’t projected to be up and running until 2042, according to the documents.”
Innovative Work Like No Other
The forecast calls for years of work to come for those seeking Austin tech construction jobs. But the type of work is even more exciting.
“These fab sites will be the pinnacle of innovation,” says The HT Group Executive Recruiter Lori Lankford. “There will be no better learning opportunity for those specializing in semiconductor facility construction.”
In its original announcement, Samsung said the initial Taylor semiconductor fab site currently being built will boost the production of advanced semiconductors and will be a key location for the fabrication of Samsung’s latest technology, “products based on advanced process technologies for application in areas such as mobile, 5G, high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI).”
The facility design and operation are based on the newly opened Samsung production line in Pyeongtaek, South Korea. Now the world’s largest semiconductor facility, the Pyeongtaek site is an innovation marvel designed for mass production at a scale and efficiency never before seen. It’s set to debut Samsung’s new Gate-All-Around (GAA) process, which “allows for an up to 35% decrease in size while providing 30% higher performance, or 50% lower power consumption, compared to the 5nm process.” The Central Austin facilities will also help make the process a reality once they’re online.
