JOB SUMMARY
The Operations Manager, under the supervision of the Director of Operations – Offsite, will ensure all city and transfer contracts are correctly executed, assist with the development of the local market area and interact regularly with all directors, area market managers, service managers, drivers and customers. The Operations Manager will also report all issues and concerns requiring attention to the Director of Operations – Offsite and to the Commercial and Residential System Managers.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
- In a collaborative process with HR, Safety and senior management, hire and train drivers, transfer station and collection staff of the assigned facility.
- Ensure drivers and operations staff complete each day’s work.
- Supervise hauling company drivers and conduct regular inspections on company vehicles.
- Coordinate with the central dispatch office.
- Coordinate with other departments including Safety, Maintenance, central dispatch and system managers to ensure the highest quality of service possible is being provided in a safe manner.
- Maintain key performance indicators for the facility, as applicable.
- Maintain a level of employment in accordance with workload in order to ensure quality service and safe productivity.
- Evaluate equipment quality and availability on a daily basis by communicating with the Maintenance Department.
- Regularly review route data and interact with drivers to ensure that TDS standards and policies are upheld.
- Conduct route observations and driver ride-alongs.
- Regularly interact with drivers and helpers (including monitoring by video, as applicable) to ensure they are working effectively and productively.
- Strive to ensure subordinate employees receive a performance evaluation at least annually.
- Comply with and ensure accountability for company policies and procedures related to all service standards and standard operating procedures.
- Monitor and control driver hours in order to limit labor expenditures and maintain Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) compliance.
- Review company fleet routing reports for accuracy.
- Review and/or investigate all accidents, and then collaborates with applicable senior management, if and as necessary.
- Attend all safety meetings.
- Regularly inspects company vehicles.
- Develop and maintain good relations with city and local communities and serve as the company’s liaison in matters concerning the city.
- Other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
- At least five years of previous experience managing site operations
- Working knowledge of all systems involved in solid waste management and disposal
- Basic proficiency in use of internet
- Ability to become proficient in all TDS computer systems, including our fleet routing software
- Ability to exercise independent direction and judgment and work in a fast-paced, time sensitive environment
- Strong leadership, communication, organizational and interpersonal skills
- High integrity/excellent critical thinking skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office – i.e. Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.
- Ability to read and understand profit and loss statements
- Ability to manage an operating budget
PREFERRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
- Solid waste back ground with facility management experience.
- Experience working with non-exempt employees
- Bachelor’s Degree preferably in business, management, supply chain or other related field.
REQUIRED LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS
- Valid Class C driver’s license
- Safe driving record for the past three years
- Class B MSW License or the ability to obtain one within three months of employment.
